Summary:

In the late 1930s, amidst the backdrop of Japanese-occupied Manchuria, a young woman and her close male companion embark on a journey with her ailing mother to the historic city of Nanjing in search of her estranged father, a prominent rice tycoon. Upon their arrival, she is confronted with the unsettling revelation that her companion, whom she had believed to be her betrothed, harbors feelings for another woman—a woman who is intertwined with her own family history, being the fourth spouse of her father.

In a twist of fate, an opportunistic individual who has colluded with the occupying forces takes possession of the young woman, setting her on an uncertain path during a time when loyalties and relationships are tested by war and personal ambition.
