  I'm perplexed by the mixed opinions on this drama. Did we all watch the same series? Is it just me, or are people overhyping dramas these days? As someone who relies on this site for recommendations, I'm noticing that the ratings are becoming less reliable.   Unfortunately, this drama didn't meet my expectations. Allow me to explain why. **SPOILERS...

  AHEAD!**
  
  The "romance" in this drama was painfully one-note. We witness the prince's deep pain and loneliness, making us yearn for someone to show him true love. Enter a royal servant girl who witnesses his suffering and goes above and beyond her duty to ensure his position on the throne. They develop a strong connection, but she continuously rejects his advances, leading to a repetitive and illogical dynamic.
  
  Her refusal to be with him lacked justification. It was hard to understand why a girl with limited prospects would turn down a wealthy, powerful man who had shown love, loyalty, and sacrifice. More backstory was needed to support her strong objections and provide a compelling alternative that made sense.
  
  Throughout the series, her love for the prince remained unclear, even until the final episode. Her hot and cold behavior towards him left both him and the viewers confused and frustrated. It was challenging to gauge her true feelings, despite her moments of apparent love and affection.
  
  The prince/king endured an excessive amount of tragedy, creating a bittersweet and somewhat unrealistic narrative. From the loss of loved ones to personal torment, his life seemed to lack any respite. While a touch of realism can enhance a story, this drama went too far, leaving me frustrated and yearning for a glimmer of happiness for the protagonist.
  
  The pacing was a significant drawback. The first few episodes set up a promising plot, but many middle episodes felt like repetitive and unnecessary filler. After hours of build-up, we finally glimpsed their happiness together, only for a massive time jump to skip over their significant moments as a couple. This omission deprived viewers of the joy that they had been anticipating.
  
  Additionally, there were a few frustrating plot holes, but I won't delve into them to avoid further lengthening this review. However, one notable inconsistency revolved around the second concubine's decision to bring the main character back to the palace, despite her own jealous tendencies. It seemed like an illogical choice given her character's nature.
  
  While this drama boasted high production values, the portrayal of characters in their older years lacked authenticity. Despite attempts to age them with beards and makeup, the lack of wrinkles was striking and detracted from the realism.
  
  Finally, it was uncomfortable to see a young actress brought in to portray a prostitute, even if there were no explicit scenes. It felt tasteless and unnecessary, considering the age of the character.
  
  Many claim that this drama is a masterpiece, proclaiming it the "best sageuk ever!" However, I strongly disagree. The acting, particularly from Lee Junho, Lee Deokhwa, and Oh Daehwan, was commendable, and the series had visually stunning scenes. However, the weak and repetitive storyline, coupled with a rushed and unsatisfying ending, undermines its potential. Personally, I found "The King's Affection," a similar sageuk I watched prior to this drama, far more enjoyable. It's perplexing to see the average reviews for that series in comparison.
  
  In conclusion, this drama fails to deliver on its potential. While it has its merits, the flaws in its storytelling and execution overshadow its positive aspects. To each their own, but for me, this drama fell short of greatness.
